Pou Rama is about light dispersing from an upright structure that tells a story inspired from Te Taiao, the natural environment. Pou give us a sense of security and hope, the light that it emanates also acting as a beacon drawing people in to read imagery and understand the stories portrayed.
Activity:
Design and create a freestanding pou form (post) that emanates light from the inside out using shapes and patterns deriving from Te Waonui a Tāne.
Go outside to make a few observational drawings of what you see in the ngahere. Focus on silhouette or outline shapes.
Collect bark and leaves to make rubbings from and to add to the final Pou Rama design.
Draw then cut out shapes and patterns from the cardboard while flat before shaping into a standing pou form.
Texturize your pou using foam bits, plastics, leaves and fluoro paint.
1 x A3 page, observational drawings in pencil, rubbings of leaves and bark collected, from the ngahere (forest).
